Another year is upon us and many people have resolved to be a better person or to achieve more in 2016 than they did last year. One of the major ways of achieving ones goals is by being more productive.
Productivity is about the efficient and effective use of all resources. Resources include people, time, finance, knowledge, information, equipment, space, energy, materials etc.
To be more productive, some changes in one’s lifestyle may be required and at most times, it’s very difficult for people to make or adapt to major changes. However, small changes are easy to make and can be incredibly powerful.
With this in mind, it is important to make the small changes that will make us to be more productive.
Here are 5 ways to be more productive.
- Start Your Day Early
Your life will most likely improve significantly if you could get into the habit of waking up 20 to 40 minutes earlier each morning. This is because the sooner you start your day and get things started, the more things you will most likely get done. You will complete more tasks during the day when you have more time to work.
- Have a To-Do List
Write all your daily tasks down at the beginning of each day (you may use sticky notes that can be placed next to your workstation). Your tasks should be arranged in order of importance (i.e. tasks with greater priorities should be at the top of the list). Doing this will go a long way in keeping you focused throughout the day.
- Avoid Distractions
Avoid distractions like your phone buzzes, your email dings and chat windows pop up. Every alert draws away your attention. So it is advisable to keep your phone on “silent” or hide it during work hours. You may take a few minutes every hour to see what you might have missed.
- Have a Regular Performance Review
Review your performance on a regular basis. Take time at the end of each day/week/month to evaluate your productivity. Take notes on how to make improvements for the following day/week/month.
- Actively Schedule Your Relaxation Time
Your relaxation/leisure time shouldn’t just happen by accident or be something you observe only when you get a chance. Plan ahead for your free time. For example, you might decide to take Friday evenings off work to relax. You will be happier when you take time out. The happier you are, the more motivated and productive you will be over the long term.
You will be more productive at your work if you put into action the 5 habits stated above.
